experiencing unusal temperature in my stepper motor

Post by ajith » Tue May 31, 2022 5:47 am

respected sir/madam
I have been experiencing unusal temperature rise in my stepper motor along with an initial vibration when i set drive bit 45 in my kmotion.
i cant understand the root cause of the problem.

You would need to provide more information for us to be able to help.

What are the motor specifications? What are the current jumpers on KStep Set at?

respected sir,
we have been studying a three axis robot driven by stepper motor (Make: maxima PSM57HS2A81-2P with a current rating-2.5A) - 2Nos and the third axis is driven by stepper motor (Make: maxima PSM57HS2A54-2P with a current rating-1.5A) with a current setting jumper for 1st two axis is same and as follows H- removed, M- installed, L- removed. the third motor current setting jumper is as follows H- removed, M- removed, L-installed. In this we set the current setting jumper value of 1.88A and 1.25A

That all sounds correct. How hot are the motors getting? Steppers constantly dissipate a few Watts of heat and commonly run quite hot especially if not mounted to a frame or heat sink.

Do you have any current probe to measure the current to the motors to verify KStep is working correctly?

respected sir,
the 1st and 2nd axis (make: maxima model PSM57HS2A81-2P) temperature reached around 48 to 50 degree celcius.

I think that is fairly normal. What is the motor specification? Is it mounted to a frame? You might keep it disabled when not in use.

Respected sir,
I think that is fairly normal.
you are saying that the temperature of the motor reaching 50 degree is normal but we used that stepper motor with drive using delta plc. at that time i think that motor temperature is low .
using kmotion we have been controlling three motor but we have been experiencing the temperature rise in two motor only. thats why we are thinking that its abnormal.
What is the motor specification?
MAKE: MAXIMA PSM57HS2A81-2P
STEPPER MOTOR 2 Phase
NEMA: 23
STEP ANGLE :1.8 degree
SHAFT OD: 8mm
NUMBER OF WIRES: 08
HOLDING TORQUE: 20.0 kgcm
CURRENT/PHASE: 2.5(S)/5.0(P)
RESISTANCE PHASE: 0.45 Ohm
INDUCTANCE/PHASE(mh): 1.8mh
DETENT TORQUE: 700gcm
ROTOR INERTIA: 480g-cm^2
WEIGHT: 1.10Kg
LENGTH LMax: 80mm
Is it mounted to a frame?

yes sir it is mounted to a lead screw shaft.
You might keep it disabled when not in use.
did u mean that setbit45
yes it was kept on always.

Did the plc disable or lower current when not moving?

What motor voltage is used with KStep? What was used with the PLC?

I assume the motors are wired in a series configuration? If incorrectly wired in parallel the motor should be cooler.

The specification isn't clear whether the resistance specification is in series, parallel, or? You might measure it.

MAKE: MAXIMA PSM57HS2A81-2P
STEPPER MOTOR 2 Phase
NEMA: 23
STEP ANGLE :1.8 degree
SHAFT OD: 8mm
NUMBER OF WIRES: 08
HOLDING TORQUE: 20.0 kgcm
CURRENT/PHASE: 2.5(S)/5.0(P)
RESISTANCE PHASE: 0.45 Ohm
INDUCTANCE/PHASE(mh): 1.8mh
DETENT TORQUE: 700gcm
ROTOR INERTIA: 480g-cm^2
WEIGHT: 1.10Kg
LENGTH LMax: 80mm
I meant the case temperature specification. Most motors are rated for something like 50C ambient or 80C Case temperature.
yes sir it is mounted to a lead screw shaft.
I think it is more important what the case is mounted to rather than the shaft.
did u mean that setbit45
yes it was kept on always.
See the code for disabling the motor when all axes haven't moved for a period of time. Would this work in your application? or is there constant motion?

Respected Sir,
Did the plc disable or lower current when not moving?
when the motor is not moved the pulse input for the motor is cutoff but still the drive power up the motor.
What motor voltage is used with KStep? What was used with the PLC?
The motor volatage is around 5V AND While driving via plc we power up the drive with 24v and the drive power up the motor.
I assume the motors are wired in a series configuration? If incorrectly wired in parallel the motor should be cooler.
yes sir. the motor is connected is wired in series combination.
The specification isn't clear whether the resistance specification is in series, parallel, or? You might measure it.
the resistance is common for both series and parallel.
See the code for disabling the motor when all axes haven't moved for a period of time. Would this work in your application? or is there constant motion?
are you saying about clearbit45 or disableaxis command.i usally use clearbit45.
