Kernel speed

I'm working on my second retrofit using kflop/kanalog. My first one makes obvious stepper sounds even though it's fitted with servo's. It also makes a screaming sound when the drives are in position for more than a few seconds.
I have 3 questions:
1. What should the "kernel speed " in machb3 be set to?
2. Is there a connection I should make to the "p-con" pin on the yaskawa drives to the kanalog board to put them to rest after they're in position?
3. Is there a better choice other than mach 3 for my new lathe retrofit?
