Coordinated speeds

When using .net to control an axis I will use a speed value to move a carriage to a point.
When I use the coordinated functions to run an operation, I have to use a different range values for speeds.
With an axis motion I will use a speed of 10 - 300, for coordinated speed I will use 1 - 5.
Why the different ranges of speed. Of how can I use a standard for both modes of operations. Trying to understand mainly.
